Professor Lucy Walker (UCL Division of Infection & Immunity) received the 2023 BSI Immunology Research Excellence Award, in recognition of her sustained and original contributions to the understanding of adaptive immunity. Her work on immune regulation and control of autoimmunity has had a significant impact on the field, particularly on the understanding of Treg and CTLA-4 biology. She is now using this understanding to develop new immunotherapies for type 1 diabetes and other autoimmune conditions.

1st-2nd February, 2021
Organisers: Prof Lucy Walker and Dr Deepak Rao.
This meeting focuses on how bidirectional interactions between T and B cells can underpin the development of autoimmune diseases. Coordinated interaction of these two immune cell types is key to the pathogenesis of multiple diseases, including type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. Within secondary lymphoid organs, the phenotype of T cells providing help to B cells is well documented – such follicular helper T cells (Tfh) express the transcription factor Bcl6 and characteristic surface markers such as CXCR5, PD1 and ICOS, as well as the archetypal cytokine IL-21. Circulating T cells expressing Tfh markers have been reported to be elevated in multiple autoimmune diseases and their relationship with bona fide Tfh is complex. More recently, novel B-helper populations that share features with Tfh, such as peripheral helper T cells (Tph), have been discovered in autoimmune settings. Analysis of T cell / B cell interactions within peripheral tissues, rather than secondary lymphoid organs, is yielding new paradigms that are likely to be important in the context of autoimmunity. A better understanding of the crosstalk between pathogenic T cells and B cells will open up new opportunities for intervention in a wide range of disease settings. This meeting brings together international leaders to share emerging biological insights in this area and explore their therapeutic implications.
